How to enable JavaScript in your Web browser

JavaScript is a programming language supported by many browsers which allows webpage authors to have greater control over the user’s browsing experience. JavaScript is often used to create fly-out menus, invoke pop-up windows, validate form data and so on. If JavaScript is disabled in your Web browser some Web pages will not function properly.

Here we will describe how to enable JavaScript support in the most popular Web browsers:

Mozilla Firefox
(version 2 or later)

Open Firefox click on the Tools menu and select Options....

In the Options preferences window, select the Content panel, check the Enable JavaScript checkbox (to permit JavaScripts to execute on your computer) and click the Advanced... button to open the Advanced JavaScript Settings.

Check the boxes under Allow scripts to: section that you want to allow (I recommend you to select all the boxes). Click OK.

And finally click on the OK button to save changes.

Microsoft Internet Explorer
(all versions except Pocket Internet Explorer)

Open Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu and click Internet Options....

Click on the Security tab and then click on the Custom Level... button.

Scroll down until you can see options as shown on the picture. They are located near the bottom of the list. Set the option Active scripting to Enable. Then click on the OK button.

Click Yes.

Click on the OK button to save changes.

Click the Refresh button to run scripts or hit F5 or close and restart the browser.

Opera
(version 8 or later)

Open Opera, click on the Tools menu and select Preferences....

On the Advanced tab, click Content option and check the Enable JavaScript checkbox. Click the JavaScript options... button to open the JavaScript options box.

Check the boxes that you want to allow and click OK. Click on the OK button to save changes.

Click the Back button to return to the previous page, and then click the Reload button to run scripts.

Other Browser

Safari (version 1.0 or later)

  1. Open Safari.
  2. On the Safari menu, click on Preferences.
  3. Click the Security icon.
  4. Click on Enable JavaScript checkbox.
  5. Close the Preferences window.
  6. Close and restart Safari.

Netscape (version 7 or later)

  1. Open Netscape.
  2. Select Preferences from the Edit menu.
  3. Double click Advanced in the Category list.
  4. Select Scripts & Plugins from the menu.
  5. Under the Enable JavaScript for section, check the box next to Navigator.
  6. Check the boxes under Allow scripts to section that you want to allow.
  7. Click OK to save changes.
  8. Close and restart the browser

AOL (version 4.0 or later)

  1. From the My AOL menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click the WWW icon
  3. Click Web Graphics tab.
  4. Uncheck the box next to Use Compressed Graphics.
  5. Click OK and restart the computer.
    Note that there are both 16-bit and 32-bit versions of AOL 4.0. Only the 32-bit version has full Java capabilites.

Google Chrome (version beta)

  1. Uninstall Google Chrome.
  2. Uninstall whatever Java you have.
  3. Download Java 6 update 10 or later: http://www.java.com/en/download/chrome.jsp?locale=en&host=www.java.com:80.
  4. Download and install Google Chrome and restart the computer.
